Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS)technologies such as Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and short and long term Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD) are emerging areas of clinical specialisation. This symposium is intended for medical, nursing and perfusion specialists interested in the developing areas of ECLS in Australia and New Zealand. It will cover the areas of short and long-term uni-ventricular support and ECMO. The meeting will host two world leading exponents of extracorporeal supports: Dr. Giles Peek the principal investigator for the randomised controlled trial of ECMO in severe adult respiratory failure (CESAR trial) and cardiothoracic surgeon from Glenfield Hospital Leicester United Kingdom and Dr Aly El-Banayosy from the Heart Centre Bad Oeynhausen Germany, a world leading expert in the development and clinical use of ventricular assist devices.
